Anatomical variations: It can arise directly from the axillary artery.
It passes through the triangular spaceto the infraspinous fossa.
Gives off two branches (transverse & descending) in the infraspinous fossa and anastomoses with the suprascapular artery (= transverse scapular artery) and the dorsal scapular artery (= descending branch of the transverse cervical artery).
Part of the collateral circulation of the scapula (anastomosis).
